Beauty in brevity

Advice is great, but advice on its own won’t make you a better writer. We become better writers by writing and it’s always easier to write when we’re inspired. To that end, a creative prompt using an ordinary item.

beauty in brevity | an exercise in describing a setting

While I know almost nothing about computer code, I have heard that there is an individual style to it. Where someone can be known for their elegant coding; using a limited amount of keystrokes and commands to accomplish the same task.

So it is with writing.  Fewer words, carefully chosen, draw in the reader and deliver your message.

Let's try that today as we describe the setting in the picture above.

Here are a few tips:

  • Use all 5 senses to put your reader there

  • Show, don't tell your story

  • Keep it simple

Bonus points for also conveying the tone of the scene: lonely, scary, etc.

Bonus, bonus points if you're willing to go back in to your first entry and cut the word count even further!

Have fun with it and can't wait to see your stories!
