Smoothie, in a bag (and a box)

Advice is great, but advice on its own won’t make you a better writer. We become better writers by writing and it’s always easier to write when we’re inspired. To that end, a creative prompt using an ordinary item.

smoothie, in a bag (And a box) | an exercise in writing creative product descriptions

This week’s ordinary item: Superfood smoothie kits

What is it? blendtopia offers “ready-to-blend" superfood smoothies in a box.

What’s in the box??

I don’t think I’m going to blow your mind with this statement - Eating healthy is directly linked to feeling good.

When we fill our bodies with high-quality food we have the fuel needed to build, sustain and go. When we try to go without, we’re empty (and we can feel it).

We know this, yet with the never-ending pace of our lives on-the-go, it’s hard to actually stop long enough to plan, purchase and prepare these kinds of meals.

Enter blendtopia - a company that ships out frozen superfood smoothie kits to busy households so you can open the bag, pour the contents, add some liquid, blend, fuel-up and go.

A fantastic way to always have healthy on hand.

Yet as we reviewed the site, we were presented with a multitude of options and details: 6 different smoothies, recommendations to blend with coconut water, fruit juice, green tea or water, offered in quantities of either 8, 12, 16, or 24, and available to purchase either one-time or in subscription frequencies of 1, 2, 4 or 6 weeks. Whew!

This left us with one big question - What details would you want to know?

Today’s task, write up a creative, imaginative product description promoting frozen superfood smoothies, using the details you would want to know. In other words, answer the question, “What’s in the box??”

Remember, have fun with it. Don’t take it too seriously. You won’t have ALL the information you need, but use your imagination, make up some details, tell a story, paint a picture for us.

Most importantly, write something!

Not sure where to start? Some prompts to get the creativity flowing…

  • Don’t get caught up in the practicality, find the emotions, tell a story.

  • Do these smoothies taste good? Or what will be the reaction to the taste?

  • Tell the story through the eyes of the child, or a mom, or a dad or a….pick a person’s perspective.

  • What’s the alternative to using these smoothie kits?

  • Where will these bags take you? Could they take you to an exotic location, onto a talent show stage, or…..?

Looking for professional advice on how to write a compelling product description? Here’s what a few of the experts had to say when I asked them to fill in the blank, “When writing a product description, it’s important to………”:

  • “Illustrate why your particular product is superior to your competitor's version. With such a competitive business environment, it's important to ensure that your potential customers can spot those special features that truly set your product apart.” - Alexandra Zamolo

  • “When writing a product description write for the consumer, not for the algorithm.” - Andrew Maff

  • “When writing a product description it's important to not overcomplicate it, simplify your value proposition, and add a touch of pizzazz by using strong adjectives.” - Alison McGee

  • “Keep your writing grounded and not let it get too flowery.” - Rob Swystun
