Citizen Sounder

 

"How can a professional sports organization create an organic connection to their fan base, so that it becomes less about wins and losses, and more about the community?"

We created Citizen Sounder as our answer to that question and trialed the concept with the Seattle Sounders FC MLS soccer team over the course of two seasons.

The inspiration

While helping a friend with his Ironman Canada documentary, I was inspired by the passion formed around the event. This was bigger than the individual participant or the race organizers, this was a community.

Based on this insight, I worked with my videographer friend and one other colleague to build out Citizen Sounder. We spent half a season testing a minimum viable product, with no budget, before working during the off-season to pitch the idea to the management team of the Seattle Sounders FC. This kicked off a two-year partnership with the organization.
