Skylights, tubular

Advice is great, but advice on its own won’t make you a better writer. We become better writers by writing and it’s always easier to write when we’re inspired. To that end, a creative prompt using an ordinary item.

Skylights, tubular | an exercise in writing very short headlines

This week’s ordinary item: Tubular skylights by Solatube

What is it? Mini skylights that can be installed in under 2 hours and with no construction

Solatube in five words?

When a company’s origin story goes something like this, “It all began in the 1980s when a lone Australian inventor created a product that revolutionized the way daylight was brought into a building,” it opens up all kinds of fun writing possibilities.

Yet, it’s easy for complexity to get in the way of the best of us.

After reviewing Solatube this week (big thanks to them for allowing us to feature them), we were left with one question - how would we describe the benefits in five words or less?

The task for you is to come up with their big headline in five words or less. (if inspiration really strikes, feel free to write out a few of them!)

Remember: have fun with the exercise, push the boundaries, look at this “ordinary” item in an uncommon way. Most importantly, write something!

Not sure where to start? Some prompts to get the creativity flowing…

  • Who does this benefit most? In what way?

  • How is their life better as a result? What was it like before?

  • What do their friends say? What do the kids say?

  • Imagine yourself on the street corner wearing an a-frame sign, shouting words to passers-by.

  • Picture yourself in a dark room, with no light. How do you feel? How long could you stand it? What do you miss most?
