Why do we fight?

Advice is great, but advice on its own won’t make you a better writer. We become better writers by writing and it’s always easier to write when we’re inspired. To that end, a creative prompt using an ordinary item.

why do we fight? | an exercise in more persuasive writing

I was working on a project a couple of weeks ago, a documentary film that is hoping to raise money through a crowd-funding platform, and we landed on this line as a key phrase to promote the film.

Why do we fight for the things we believe in?

It’s a powerfully reflective question, but I think it’s only the beginning. It leads to follow-up questions such as:

  • Why do we do the things we do?

  • Why do we spend our time the way we spend it?

  • Why do we prioritize this one thing and never have time for this other one?

  • Why do we love who and what we love?

  • Why do we fear the things we fear?

For those who desire to write well, these are the types of reflective questions that are important to ask both yourself and then hypothetically on behalf of the reader.

Your most compelling, persuasive, and effective writing will come from this place of deeper understanding.

Today’s task: Answer one of the above questions from either a personal or a brand/company perspective. See if you can unearth some new emotions and motivations that you hadn’t thought about before:

  1. Why do you fight for the things you believe in?

    OR

  2. Why do your customers fight for the things they believe in?
